In response to the growing crisis of food insecurity in Mwanza, Tanzania—where many families struggle daily to put food on the table—we, together with the Soma Kwa Furaha Initiative, have launched our first Local Pantry. This pantry is more than a place to receive food; it is a symbol of hope and dignity for families who too often go to bed hungry.
Our initiative places special emphasis on supporting women with children living with disabilities, who face additional economic and caregiving challenges. Research in Tanzania shows that households caring for a child with a disability often spend up to three times more on basic needs, making food insecurity an even heavier burden. By providing consistent access to nutritious meals, we aim to ease this pressure and help mothers focus on the well-being of their children.
The pantry will be stocked with nutritious staple foods—such as grains, vegetables, and proteins—alongside other essential supplies. We are working hand in hand with local businesses, farmers, and community partners to keep the pantry sustainable and reliable, ensuring that families in Mwanza can depend on this resource month after month.
Through this project, our goals are clear:
- Combat hunger by ensuring vulnerable families do not go without meals.
- Relieve stress on mothers who carry the dual responsibility of caregiving and providing.
- Promote dignity and community support by making food a right, not a privilege.
Together, we can transform the reality of hunger in Mwanza into a future of nourishment, resilience, and hope.
